Mental disorders delay or slow down a child's mental development. The child learns more slowly than any other child of his or her age. He may be late to move, smile, show interest, use hands, sit, walk, talk and understand. Or he can quickly develop some of these skills, but slow down others.
Mental disorders range from mild to severe. A child with a mild disability will take longer to learn certain skills. But with help he takes care of himself and is an active and responsible participant in the community. A child with severe depression may develop at an early age or as a child. You always have to take care of him in some way.
Children are described as "mentally handicapped," and adults sometimes respond to their failures in ways that provoke helplessness. The generalizability of such labeling effects was assessed in this study. Participants were adults of four groups that differed in social experience with retarded children: in each group, some subjects were subscribed to developmental status (similar reasoning for retarded and non-starter children's mental age and learning ability) and some differential positions. (Retarded children lag behind their peers in mental retardation ability). All subjects were judged on "retarded" and ineligible child failure. Strong labeling effects were found among proponents of differential status, but not among proponents of developmental status, as well as among groups with less professional experience. The results indicate that beliefs that are consistent with both belief and experience with retarded children attract the effects of inducing the helplessness of the mentally retarded.
What is Mental illness?
Some people confuse with 'mental illness'. But they are very different. A person with a mental illness may have general or high intelligence and be highly educated. But his behavior turns out to be strange because of stressful experiences or some brain disorder. When a depressed person behaves in an unusual way, he usually does not learn the right way to behave. You have to teach him. You need special help for the mentally ill - perhaps a spiritual therapist or 'psychiatrist'. People with mental illness are just like people with other illnesses. Often they cannot control their strange behavior. We should not condemn or punish them, but give them love, protection and understanding.
Causes Of Mental Retardation
1: Often the cause is unknown.
2: Some children are born with very small brains, or the brain does not grow or function normally.
3: Sometimes 'chromosomes' have little chemical messages, which determine what is 'wrong' or what the child looks like. The same thing happens with Down syndrome.
4: Sometimes the mother does not receive specific foods or minerals during pregnancy.
5: Brain injury can occur before, during, or after birth. In addition to retarded, these children may also have cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, or fits.
6: German measles during pregnancy.
7: Bacterial meningitis often from bacteria, tuberculosis or malaria (brain infection) in childhood
8: Hydrocephalus, often with spina bifida
9: Toe injuries to the head
10. Other causes of the brain include brain tumor, lead poisoning, pesticides , certain drugs and foods, certain types of muscular dystrophy or atrophy
