Physical Handicap Definition and Description

Physical Handicap refer to defects or diseases that occur in individual or partial organs, muscles, bones, nervous system or cardiopulmonary function, etc., resulting in significant difficulties and limitations in daily life.

Characteristics of Physical Disorders


Students with physical disabilities often encounter different difficulties in activities due to the lack of physical functions of the body:
  • Organs, muscles, or skeletal system defects or diseases may have muscle weakness, joint inflammation, muscle atrophy, or spine flexion, resulting in inability to walk, sit up alone, or use both hands to operate;
  • People with cardiopulmonary dysfunction or disease may be affected by breathing problems or heart defects, so that they can not exercise vigorously, and they are also more susceptible to disease;
  • People with defects or diseases in the nervous system will have problems such as poor coordination of movements and abnormal sensory functions, resulting in the inability to manipulate limb activities at will.
Distresses that Students with Physical Disabilities may encounter:

  • Can't write or the writing speed is slow;
  • It takes more time to get from one place to another;
  • Unable to stand, sit or walk for long periods of time;
  • Because of the limitation of mobility, it is easy to be separated from people and produce a sense of isolation;
  • It is easy to feel frustrated and inferiority due to the need of others' help, and then to withdraw or excessive self-defense mentality;
  • Some physical disabilities can affect the appearance or posture thus increasing the social anxiety of students with physical disabilities, causing social and emotional adaptation problems.
