How to assist students with physical disabilities?
Teaching
- Understand the special needs of students with physical disabilities in terms of actions, language communication, self-care and physical posture, etc., and avoid subjectively identifying their limitations in all aspects without communication;
- Put course materials, teaching materials, grades, comments, and other materials that are helpful for learning and completing homework on the Internet or email to students, so that students with physical disabilities do not need to go to the college office, library or other places to obtain relevant information;
- If the assignment requires a lot of activity to complete, students can be arranged in small groups so that students with physical disabilities can work with other students to complete the assignment;
- Students with physical disabilities are allowed to take notes by methods other than transcription (such as using a voice recorder, a computer with voice input method, etc.);
- To meet the needs of students with physical disabilities, consider extending the examination time or submitting assignments, or provide assessment methods other than writing;
- When arranging teaching, experiment, visiting, inspection or internship locations, consider the difficulties that students with physical disabilities may encounter in advance, and pay attention to transportation needs.
- The limitations of each physically disabled student in dynamic activities and expertise in static activities vary from person to person, please take the initiative to discuss with them to deepen understanding;
- Learn in advance from students with physical disabilities how to help them when an emergency occurs;
- Observe the students with physical disabilities carefully. If they restrict the activity space or communicate with others due to mobility difficulties, they can try to actively talk to them and gradually induce them to expand the activity space;
- When going up and down stairs or elevators, make room for students with physical disabilities to use handrails;
- Some wheelchair users will regard the wheelchair as a part of their body, do not lean on their wheelchair at will;
- When talking with wheelchair users for a few minutes or more, try to sit down or adjust their position so that they can talk to you at a comfortable angle and posture;
- Do not push the wheelchair without permission, only when the wheelchair user requests or obtains permission from the other party;
- Set yourself up to imagine or try to experience the daily life, thoughts and feelings of students with physical disabilities.
